As a makeup artist one of the top questions I am asked by everyone who sits in my chair, whether it’s a model, celebrity, or TV personality is what makeup do you love and what should I use?
My answer is simple and always shocking. You can use/buy any makeup you like. Any price point. The makeup does not matter. Now, I know this may come as a surprise to many of you and I am sure other makeup artists reading this are rolling their eyes at me right now because the secret is out!
The foundation to great looking makeup is, and always starts with, good skin care and properly looked after skin. Skin that is taken care of, well hydrated, moisturized, and maintained, creates a canvas that the make up loves by providing less to cover up. Having great skin requires less makeup. (That’s right, a makeup artist just said less makeup) Less makeup allows your skin to breath. Here are my 5 tips to achieving great makeup.
1. Invest in your skin. Regular Facials every 4-6 weeks by a licensed esthetician allow for deeper exfoliation and moisture, and helps address certain skin issues. By building an ongoing relationship with your esthetician allows you both to continually keep up with your skin and it’s needs as it changes through the years.
2. Great Skin Care. Finding the right quality skin care products that work for your skin type can be difficult. Together with your esthetician you can find a skincare line and price point that work best for you. Remember, sometimes you need different products for different times of the year, or what worked for you three years ago may not still be working.
3. Drink Water. I know, I know, we have heard it all before. But not only is water good for your body, it’s good for your skin. From the inside out. It clears the skin of toxins, adds moisture and even helps with your digestive system and Rosacea.
4. Avoid the fun stuff. OK, OK, at least avoid most and in moderation of the rest. Smoking, alcohol, eating too much of the wrong foods, too much coffee, too much chocolate (As if there is such a thing!) not enough sleep, too much sun, too much air-conditioning, too much heat and even recreational drugs all show up on your face. Your face is a map to your body, and there are no secrets from your makeup artist! When you sit in my chair I can have a pretty accurate read on what you have been up to! And don’t worry I won’t tell.
5. AWAYS wear sunscreen. You may feel better about yourself when you have a fresh tan or a bit of color, but the fun in the sun you have today will come back to haunt you in 10 years! Make daily sunscreen a part of your morning routine!
