That's why she wanted to share a Heavenly Eye Treatment that she loves to make at home, it's perfect after a long day at work - and an easy way for you to recreate that spa experience for yourself!

Cielo Spa's Heavenly Eye Treatment

1. In the morning, simply make two cups of black tea as you usually would.

2. After steeping your tea, (so good for you!), gently squeeze each tea bag and place in a small covered dish in the refrigerator to chill. You want each tea bag to still hold a little moisture but not be drippy or wet feeling.

3. In the evening, find a comfortable spot to rest and place a chilled tea bag over each eye, allowing it to rest over the eye area for 10-20 minutes. You might want to gently press the tea bag around each eye to "hug" the eye contour area.

4. The longer you let it sit on your eyes, the greater the benefit you'll enjoy.

5. When you're done, remove the tea bags and discard. Splash your face with cool water and pat dry with a soft towel.

Fundraiser: An Afternoon for Andre Barbieri - Saturday, June 4th

My son's first grade teacher has organized an event for Andre Barbieri, a local man who was in a terrible snowboarding accident where he shattered his femur and tore his femoral artery, resulting in amputation of his lower left leg. Unfortunately he was without health insurance at the time, so friends have rallied together to help raise money to get him a prosthetic leg.

If you would like to help, a fundraiser has been put together for him tomorrow (Saturday, June 4th, 12noon - 5pm) called "An Afternoon for Andre" at The Rancho Embarcadero Clubhouse in Goleta. With Memorial Day a few days away, having fun in the sun is upon us! There has never been a better time to review your sun protection practices and remember to keep them up year round. Although the sun may seem "weaker" during the winter or morning and evening hours, the truth is that UVA rays emit at the same level, whether it is morning, noon or night.

The Skin Cancer Foundation, who has advocated using a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher since its inception in 1979, has provided us with skin cancer protection tips:

Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.

Do not burn.

Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths.

Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.

Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.

Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.

Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.

See your physician every year for a professional skin exam.

Busy Working Mom Featured Recipe: Rosemary Roasted Hazelnuts

Hazelnuts are a great source of energy and one of the staples of the holiday season. Enjoy this recipe and try not to eat them all in one sitting! Perfect for antipasto fare or crush coarsely and coat a round of soft goat cheese and serve with warm bread. Keep an eye on them during the baking process because nuts can go from "not done" to "overdone" in nothing flat.

Ingredients
2 cups raw hazelnuts
1/4 cup fresh rosemary, finely chopped
1/3 cup dark brown sugar
2 Tbsp sunflower oil
4-8 dashes of hot sauce (cholula is our favorite) or to taste
pinch of coarse salt

Prepare
Preheat oven to 350 degrees with rack set in center. Combine all ingredients in a bowl, mixing well and spread out on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for about 20 minutes, stirring several times, until nuts are toasted and brown sugar has caramelized. Remove from oven, let cool and enjoy.

Tips on Finding a "Safe" Waxing Spa from Cielo Day Spa Santa Barbara

When seeking out a spa for a waxing, whether it be for a brow or Brazilian wax, you want to make sure the spa practices "safe" waxing in a clean environment. Why? Because ending up with a misshapen brow may seem like no big deal, but ending up with an infection can be a big pain - literally!

These are signs that you are probably receiving a "safe" waxing treatment:

Questionnaire: They ask you to fill out a questionnaire. It's not a waste of time! It lets the aesthetician know if you have any health conditions or are taking any medicine that may interfere with hair removal.

What are you lying on? Ideally you want to be lying on paper (similar to what is placed on an exam table in a doctor's office) instead of (or over) a sheet. If it's not crinkled and torn, you know it is changed after each client.

The aesthetician is wearing gloves. Any hair removal can draw blood. Gloves protect the client and the aesthetician.

Watch what they do with the stick! The applicator stick should not be double-dipped into the wax product. Once it has touched your skin, the aesthetician should discard it and use a new one. Double-dipping contaminates the wax.

For a bikini wax, you should be given disposable panties, which are much more hygienic than wearing your own.

Signs that may make you want to say "no thanks, I'll find another place to get waxed at":

The facility is messy, dusty, looks rundown. If they can't maintain their business aesthetics, what else are they not maintaining?

The wax pot has wax all over. Wax pots can (and should) be cleaned, there is no excuse to have wax dripping all over the pot.

Tweezers, often used in conjunction with waxing, need to be sanitized between patients. If they put the tweezer back in the drawer / container, this may indicate that they are not sanitizing their instruments.

Finally, ask what their sanitation procedures are. If they can't explain it to you, then they are probably not doing it!

In a recent Talulah newsletter, we came across an easy at-home hair revitalization treatment that we had to share!

You may notice that after repeated exposure to sun, sand, salt water and chlorinated pools, your hair is limp, dry and lifeless, sometimes accompanied by oily roots too. This clarifying rinse lifts away residue and build-up, and is recommended once per week. 1. In a quart size mason jar, pour one inch of organic apple cider vinegar and take it with you to the shower on a day you plan on shampooing your hair.

2. After stepping into the shower, fill the remaining space in the jar with warm water (all the way to the top) and pour in small batches over your still dry hair and scalp. I usually do this while luxuriating under the running water, pouring about 1/4 of the apple cider vinegar/water mixture over my head at a time, starting at the scalp and periodically rubbing my hair and scalp my other hand to work it in and help loosen any buildup.

3. Once the entire jar has been applied to the hair and scalp, I let it sit for a few minutes while I say, pumice my feet or shave my legs. Then I rinse, shampoo and condition as usual. Your hair will have a faint apple scent but won't smell like vinegar.

This simple routine will leave your hair with incredible shine, bounce and vibrancy. Enjoy!

Summer Low-Cal Cocktail Guide

Now that summer is finally here - for us in Santa Barbara - this article seemed appropriate. Read on for tips on which cocktails you can indulge in ("green light"), which you can moderately enjoy ("yellow light") and which are an absolute no-no ("red light"). The following contents on this post are from an article titled "Summer Cocktail Calorie Counter" by Michael Stolper, published on WeightWatchers.com:

The Good ("green light selections")

Sangria – Traditional red sangria is made by combining red wine, brandy and fruit, but there are a number of delectable white sangria recipes out there too. Served cold, this refreshing cocktail never gets old, and the fresh fruit adds a healthy dose of vitamins and fiber. Opt for the red variety, which has the added benefit of artery-protecting flavonoids.

The Classic Martini – James Bond knew what he was doing all those years. By drinking martinis, 007 managed to save his waistline while he was saving those femme fatales. Because they're 100% liquor, martinis are naturally lower in calories (and they get the job done quickly). If you're going to choose flavored vodka, look for one that doesn't add sugar. "When in doubt, ask to taste the vodka. If it tastes sweet…you have your answer," says Van Flander.

Quality Liquors + "Smart Mixers" – If you're a mixed drink purist who enjoys classic mixed drinks (rum and coke, vodka tonic, seven and seven, etc.), there are several tricks you can use to cut the calories. Try using Diet Coke, diet tonic or sparkling water in lieu of your usual mixer. If the taste offends thee, simply add more lime, which does an amazingly good job cutting that "diet" flavor.

The Bad ("yellow light selections")

The Margarita – A summertime staple, the tequila-based margarita is full of sugar, which can leave you with a stomach ache the next morning. A single serving of margarita mix is likely to run you nearly 200 calories (all sugar), and that's before you add tequila. It's hard to beat this classic, so enjoy it in moderation.( The salt doesn’t affect caloric intake, if you enjoy it, have some. If you want to try and avoid additional water retention skip the salted rim).

The Mojito – Equally high in sugar, the stylish mojito is another cocktail best enjoyed in moderation. The muddled sugar and sweet rum are sure to set you back a few sit-ups, but the refreshing minty zing is worth the hit. Have one or two, and then switch to something else.

The Blood Mary – Loaded with vitamin A and vitamin C, the enduring Bloody Mary offers a spicy alternative to your average summer cocktail. When garnished properly, this drink crosses the line into salad territory. Fiber galore! Enjoy this spicy treat, but beware of the salt content.

The Ugly ("red light selections")

The Long Island Iced Tea – Rum, gin, vodka, tequila, triple sec, sour mix and a splash of cola join forces to create this high-calorie powerhouse drink estimated at 380 calories per serving. Plus... epic hangovers. Avoid.

The Mudslide – With a name like "Mudslide" you know if must be bad. A traditional mudslide contains only three ingredients: coffee liqueur, Irish cream and vodka, not to mention the ice cream that’s often incorporated. Individually, these ingredients should sound your inner nutrition alarm; together they add up to an almost laughable high-cal cocktail. "Any cocktail that contains dairy is a recipe for disaster," says Van Flander. These cocktails are full of unnecessary fats and should be avoided.

The Chocotini (aka The Chocolate Martini) – Red alert. This trendy drink has worked its way onto a lot of menus lately. There are many variations on the recipe, but your typical chocotini contains most (or all) of the following ingredients: crème de cacoa, Kahlua, triple sec, vodka and maraschino cherries. Creamy, caloric madness. Skip to the next page in the bar menu.

Cielo Day Spa Recipe of the Month: Refreshing Rhubarb Bellini

Serve your family and friends something different at your barbecue this month! This bellini is made with rhubarb, a good source of fiber, calcium and vitamin C. Choose stalks that are firm and crisp and if stalks become limp during storage in the fridge, plunge into an ice water bath before use to restore firmness.

What You Need
2 lbs. rhubarb, cut into 1 inch pieces
Two-thirds cup confectioners sugar
1 bottle brut sparkling wine, such as cuvee or cava

How to Make It
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Toss together rhubarb pieces and sugar on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet, spread out in a single layer and bake for 25-30 minutes, (stirring once or twice) until tender when pierced with a fork. Cool for 5-10 minutes and transfer cooked rhubarb to a food processor, whirling until smooth. Press mixture through a medium mesh strainer to remove stringy solids and decant the liquidy puree into a pretty pitcher. Fill a champagne glass half full of sparkling wine, spoon in one heaping tablespoon of the rhubarb puree and fill glass the rest of the way with sparkling wine. Take care, as sparkling wine tends to fizz a bit when combined with fruit purees.

Continuing education is important to me and I recently attended a seminar with Lori Nestore, the "waxing queen", to become more proficient in waxing - getting the job done faster, minimizing discomfort and educating clients in aftercare. With the knowledge I gathered from the course, I decided to change the wax I use to stripless hard wax that removes fine and course hair and heats on a low temperature to lessen any irritation, ideal for even the most sensitive skin. By adhering to the hair, not the skin, hard wax gently removes hair from most sensitive areas. Stripless waxing hair removal leaves the skin smooth and residue free.

For the optimum results from waxing, we recommend three tools that will help prevent painful, ingrown hairs and improve the smoothness of skin. All treatments should be applied at least 48 hours after waxing.

First and foremost, exfoliation is key to successfully avoiding ingrown hairs and maintaining a smooth skin surface. Cielo Day Spa Suggested Recipe: Homemade Lemonade for Hot Days!

How about something refreshing and reinvigorating to serve your guests on these warm summer afternoons? What makes this lemonade special is the addition of rosemary. Rosemary is traditionally used to soothe tension headaches, reduce fevers, stimulate sluggish circulation and improve memory, and is also rich in antioxidants and brain protecting carnosic acid.

What you need:
half cup organic sugar
6 cups water
6 to 8 sprigs rosemary
three quarters cup freshly squeezed lemon juice

How to make it:
Combine sugar with 2 cups of water in a small pot and bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat, add the rosemary and cover. Steep rosemary for at least thirty minutes. Strain the syrup into a decorative pitcher and stir in lemon juice and remaining four cups of water. Adjust flavor with additional lemon, sugar or agave nectar, to taste. Chill well and enjoy over ice. Garnish with a fresh rosemary sprig if you like.

Sip slowly and enjoy!

Don't "Fry Day" is Coming Up: Sun Protection Awareness

As a Santa Barbara day spa owner, and a Mom, living in a beautiful, coastal (and sunny) town, sun protection is important to me. Facials, especially my All Natural (Organic) Facial, helps to calm the skin, renew the skin, and heal the skin, but facials alone aren't the answer to glowing, youthful skin. More than 2 million skin cancers are diagnosed each year in the U.S. (that's more than cancers of the prostate, breast, lung, colon, uterus, ovaries, and pancreas combined).

Most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun and from man made sources such as tanning beds.

Tips on how to prevent the harmful ultraviolet rays from damaging your skin:

Cover up: wear clothing to protect the skin.

SPF 15+: use a sunscreen with Sun Protection Factor 15 or higher. Reapply every two hours, especially if swimming or sweating.

Wear a hat with 2-inch brim: protect the delicate skin of the face, neck, ears and nose!

Wear sunglasses: look for sunglasses with at least 99% UV absorption.

Limit sun exposure: plan outdoor activities before 10:00am or after 4:00pm to avoid the most intense UV rays.

Say "no" to tanning beds and sunlamps: try a self-tanning cream or bronzing lotion instead.
